Loss of aggregate from traffic and wind is a constant problem for road maintenance crews. DustGard magnesium chloride helps counties, cities and private agencies stretch their maintenance dollars.
As the fines are lost from the road, the larger aggregate becomes loose and leads to wash boarding and reduced skid resistance. Road maintenance will be harder, requiring fresh gravel with a higher percent of fines to stabilize the road.
Studies have shown that as much as one ton of aggregate per mile is lost each year for each vehicle that passes over a road daily. This means that a road carrying 150 vehicles per day will lose 150 tons of aggregate per mile each year. Assistant Road Supervisor Verlin Van Zee of Lakes Highway District, Idaho says,
"DustGard has reduced road grading from two or three times per month to one or two times per year. We've reduced our road equipment, allowing our manpower to do other maintenance needs. In the nine years since we started the road treatment program, we have not re-graveled any of our gravel roads, and after three years of using the product, we have been able to cut our treatments in half. But, our biggest benefit is public safety and customer satisfaction. Since we've been treating our roads, we have reduced our complaints from the public by 90 percent!"
